At the time I built it, I wasn’t aware that this was something to consider. I must have gotten lucky, it sounded the way I expected with the first ones I grabbed and put in there.

There’s definitely some subjectivity here. The way I see it is, not necessarily high gain, but more-so the effect is producing enough upper harmonics in a way that they are creating an audible dissonance.

If you’re wanting to get into that territory, a wave folder is another to consider. There’s usually a sweet spot in-between “normal” sounding and white noise. The Prunes and Custard is kind of a tame version of, but cool in its own way. The Unpleasant Surprise also dips into this territory...

The illustration in the build docs could certainly be better, I think it looks confusing for the folks who need it. So I’m going to layer another crappy drawing on top. Basically, the positive from the jack goes to the 9v pad and the current limiting resistor.

Nice. I’ve been a fan of large first row, smaller 2nd row knobs. Looks classy. This pcb has been in my box for a while. But I started populating a War Scythe so I’ll get to it one way or another.

That right there touches the fundamental rub. If you know what you’re doing, then you can use it to develop quicker. If you know what you’re doing, it’s because you put in the work and like doing it. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can probably get something to work. But then the slop...
