Alternatives to Isopropyl Alcohol for cleaning pcbs and components

awesome, thanks guys...I still have isopropyl for now but not expecting to be able to resupply anytime soon. The local hardware store has online ordering and curbside pickup so I'll probably just get some denatured alcohol the next time I need to order some other things.

Alternatives to Isopropyl Alcohol for cleaning pcbs and components

I assume I wouldn't want to use too strong of a solvent or risk damaging the board. Would denatured alcohol work or is that still too strong? Should I use something milder like everclear or high proof vodka?

    Cream Pie Fuzz

thanks, it sounds pretty awesome too which is the important part.

    Cream Pie Fuzz

This 2nd build went much smoother than the first, although I still managed to stick a cap in backwards on the first go. My soldering seems to have dramatically improved, after redoing the last board several times I seem to have a better feel and a better eye for it. As for the artwork, it was...

Phase II: Rise of the Boognish

nice appropriately themed knobs. I'm particularly fond of the wandering eye

    CrackleJack (1st build)

Thanks, definitely not the last one, that's for sure...I've got the parts to start a couple others right away but I feel a strong need spend a couple days actually playing guitar again before I jump into the next one. Probably should clean and org the work area a bit too. Next one I have with a...

    CrackleJack (1st build)

Since I already showed off my bad soldering skills in the troubleshooting thread I figured I should let you all admire my bad artwork as well. I was originally gonna leave it plain white which probably would have looked good with the marshall style knobs but after I labeled the knobs I ended up...

SOLVED CrackleJack - attenuates instead of boosts signal

update: I tried all my bs170s, they all work except the original one. all the working ones give a drain voltage of about 4.3-4.5v with gain at max The original, now reads low, around 0.7v. Bad soldering was definitely the culprit because swapping transistors did not work prior to the reflow...

SOLVED CrackleJack - attenuates instead of boosts signal

The circuit is now working. I tried a quick bs170 swap out and had the same results. Then I reflowed some trouble joints and at first it wasn't working with the original bs170 so I was about to stop for the night but decided to try yet a 3rd bs170 and it suddenly came to life. This one tests...

SOLVED CrackleJack - attenuates instead of boosts signal

So if I am understanding correctly, I'd ideally be getting the full 3.0v dc listed as Vgs(th) on the spec sheet when gain is maxed. What value am I aiming for when gain is min? I'm going to a concert tonight so I won't get to try this until tomorrow evening. I do have 3 other BS170s that I...

SOLVED CrackleJack - attenuates instead of boosts signal

Thanks for clarifying the meter blunder. so now I'm reading 2.86v with gain at max and 5.46 with gain at min

SOLVED CrackleJack - attenuates instead of boosts signal

So maybe my multimeter isn't very good it's definitely a cheapo, but I've never really been able to get any good readings with the black lead connected to COM or I'm doing it wrong. If Drain is the one on the far right when viewing component side of board top down with LED up, then the readings...
