2N1711 alternative for Cross Contaminator

I accidentally bought a Cross Contaminator board in my last purchase. I have everything except the two 2N1711's.

I can only find the 2N1711 at Digi-key, with minimum order of 20 units

I've seen one person mention using a MPSA42, but those are seemingly hard to find at the moment also.

Are there any other alternatives that would be workable for use in the Cross Contaminator?

Thanks for the help

2N3904 & 2N2222 are not exactly low gain, unless you're buying rejects from a Chinese vendor on eBay. 2N2221 is a good low gain metal can tranny. I got some on sale for $1 ea at Electronic Goldmine last month. Occasionally, EG will put a transistor assortment on sale. If you have a tester and a little patience, you can get a broad selection and save some $$$.

There are LOT of substitute low gain Si trannies. Get a CCTT* and test the ones you have.

I measured these from my stash just now:

2N2221 - HFE = 92 (Electronic Goldmine)
2N2219A - HFE = 136 (Vintage stash)
2N2222A - HFE = 172 (Vintage stash)
2N2369 - HFE = 86 (Vintage stash)
2N5154 - HFE = 73 (Vintage stash)
2N914 - HFE = 67 (Vintage stash)
2N6517 - HFE = 107 (Electronic Goldmine)
2N3904 - HFE = 166 (Electronic Goldmine)
2N1711 - HFE = 107 (Small Bear)

These are samples. Other transistors with the same part # may be different. I have observed a large HFE spread in 2N2222A & 2N3904. If you're looking for a specific HFE, then you have to test them.

Indeed. Who knew? I got some first-hand experience with them breadboarding the Animals Diamond Peak. Low gain Si really smooths out a FuzzFace.
