Making the Unicab work for Bass?

Hello everyone, I am planing to build the UniCab but specifically for use with a bass. I know the pedal it is based on was supposedly good for use with both the bass and guitar but I was wondering if there are any mods that would make it work even better for bass.

Thank you in advance.

The only bass specific pedals I had were fuzz and overdrive. I’ve never had any issues with anything else not being a “bass” pedal.

IIRC, the Omnicab (which the Unicab is based on) was originally basically designed for bass. Daniel Schwartz was active on the TalkBass forum, there's info there about the OmnicabSim and reviews of its effectiveness on bass.

Mr Schwartz also had a DIY offering, the precursor to the Omnicab, which was called the MultiCab:
(Vero layout link for Multicab in DIYSB thread above.)

Condor is said to have more bass than Daniel Schwartz’s Multicab sim (MULTI, not Omni). The Omni is substantially different enough from its DIY predecessor and as Jimilee alluded, you shouldn't need to do anything different with the Unicab circuit to make it work well with bass.

I suggest building all three: Condor, Multicab and Unicab.

While you're at it, check out Dead Astronaut's spiffy cab-sim. Marshall-based IIRC, but I could be out to launch and spacing on that one.

or maybe also (in no particular order) vero/perf:
  • ROG Cab Sim — discrete

  • Simple Sim by Joe Davidson
  • Stoned Tone Bulldog Cab Sim
  •
Cab Sim/Headphone Amp/Audio Mixer by Aron Nelson

  • Marshall Cab Sim
  • Hexe's cab sim
  • YERAYM's CAB SIM
  • DISTORQUE’s Speaker Sim VERO
  • LXH2 Lite FENDER Speaker Simulator DIY-PCB-ETCH (also a Marshall version)
  • ...
There's a perf layout of Bajaman's cab sim over at ELS as well as some other cab or speaker sims.

Schematics are available for the following, if you wanted to do your own layout:
  • BOSS Speaker Simulator TM-3 SCHEMATIC
  • Cab Freq simulator SCHEMATIC
  • LART CAB SIM schematic (NOT the simple cab sim 2) RcvNTxaP_o
  • Morley JD10 clone (might be a PCB of this somewhere IIRC)
  • Celestian G12H Sim SCHEMATIC
  • ...

Mods & BASS version of Speaker Sim

I have no skin in the cab-sim game, but IMO, looking at all the above list and associated features of each, Unicab is my favourite.
I bought both the PPCB Condor and Unicab.

I have not specifically tried it with a bass, but the unicab (to me) tends to lean to a more bass heavy/darker tone anyways. Depending on what you are looking to achieve with the pedal, you could build a MBP Sludgehammer

Thank you very much for such a detailed answer. I'll build it as is. Given how many circuits you are familiar with do you have any bass pre-amps you would recommend pairing with it?

Depends...

Are you wanting to use this for a Tiki Surf Band that covers Elevator classics, or is this for a SLUDGE-DOOM-METAL-TRIBUTE-BAND to all the teeny bop-stars such as Brittnay Spearohead, This-Just-in Bleetbert, Mini-Smiley-Papyrus-before-she-all-growed-up, Trail-or-trash Swifter etc... A Doctors & Lawyers Booze Bland?...? ?

Traynor TS-50B
Traynor Monoblock
Acoustic 360
Gallien-Kreuger
LAB L4

Those would be my top choices, theoretically. I've yet to try them all, personally, but I like the clips I've heard.

Sacrilege for me to say so, probably, but I'd completely avoid ALL SVT-related stuff. Why would you want to sound like every other %^*&(*) bass-player out there?

Oh, right. It sounds good. So ... Sans Amp type things and other pedals such as the SFT etc... 🥱. Now that I've said that I'll probably be subjected to a forced blindfold listening test and unwittingly choose an SVT-related circuit over everything else.
At the very least...

I'm sure I'm missing some, but you'll likely come across any I missed whilst looking through the list above.

Thank you for the list. To be honest I am looking for it to sound just like every Bass player. I am a guitar player but enjoy messing around on the bass / using it to fill out things I make but am in no way a bass player or could fill that role well in a band. So the goal really is just for a good rich bass sound, nothing fancy. That said - thanks for the detailed response I will give those a look!
