yeah a proper piece of grainy hardwood would be so much nicer (although difficult to acquire in ≤5mm thickness). here i've just cut a piece from a length of paulownia 'hobby wood', from the local hardware joint. it's pretty pale and dull so i tried to make use of a 'mahogany' stain this time...
