Axiom PAE-1

I'm a little bit suspicious about the marketing spiel and it definitely feels like a "ohh I'll build that, it seems very interesting, and then I'll end up not using it because it's just a bit too much, you know", but at least it seems to be something very different from the normal YATS or whatever.

I have one of these and it's pretty cool. I'm not sure if it's worth the price but I do know that with a tube pre and an IR loader it gives me the 5e3 tone I want to clumsily attempt NY & Crazy Horse. Every hobby I attempt devolves into DIY nonsense instead so I'm not much of a guitarist.

I've monkeyed around with the supplied Princeton setting as well and it seems "better" than the similar settings on the Cab M software sim.

I popped it open and the gut shot is uninteresting, all the components are on the hidden side of the board, so it's hard to get an idea of what might be going on. If I ever have time I might pull it out to see.

Would ya wanna post some gut shots?

I’m curious what’s going on in there.

I have my theories

It's not all that complicated to dial in once you mess around with it. Everything behaves basically like you'd expect.

I can try to get some pictures but I'll have to remove it from the box first. All you can see when you open it is a trimmer, dip switch, and the soldered leads.

I have a bunch of projects waiting on my 3D printer to get back up after some upgrades. I want to print rocket sockets for this sort of thing.

How long have you had yours?

When did this thing first come out? One demo vid is from 9 months ago, the other two are from 4 months ago.

If it does anything close to as advertised, you'd think all the magazine and video-reviewers would be all over this thing. Fama's skepticism seems to be contagious. 😸

4 x knobs
2 x switches
1 x trimmer
1 x dipswitch

Not to derail, but to stimulate further interest in the OP's circuit and ones like it:

For the Bass Players, and/or adventurous guitarists, there's also the GK-RAILS off of Talkbass:

Final schematic (Page 22, Post #437) https://www.talkbass.com/threads/gk-rails-in-a-pedal.1122467/page-22#post-16799096

I've got a Deadbug Circuits PCB for the Rails lying in wait, I plan on pairing it with Julian's GK-Pre https://schalltechnik04.de/en/home.

I'm not sure when it was released, I think based on FB posts he batches maybe 10 or so a month. I've had it a few months.

The skepticism is warranted, there's a few people on TGP (where I found out about it) that fanboy over it, which makes it seem even more like snake oil IMO.

I like the sounds I get from it but I don't have the experience to say it's something new and not just say a compressor, boost, and OD in a box. Especially before seeing the other side of the board.

Yeah TGP tends to be full of idiots lol

I was one of those idiots for a while. I still browse the emporium for deals from time to time.

The PAE is one of the only analog standalone power amp emulator pedal I've seen. It honestly has way too many knobs for me. I'd love to have something simple that had a few switches to go between 2 or 3 set options that adjust the feel (I guess compression and eq?) with an output knob and an input control (switch or pot) so that I could use instrument level pedals or preamps into it.

I had a Nux Solid Studio for a while and it was honestly really good. But it was digital so its not something that can be made easily.

So I've also had my eye on this pedal but in the meantime I found a couple of circuits that may be more up my alley (and yours!)

Baja Presence and Resonance
Baja Reactor

The first circuit is a Presence and Resonance emulator, similar to the controls on a "Soldano, Marshall, Fender, Peavey etc". I found it looking for a schematic of the Amptweaker Depth finder. Eventually I ended up on the thread for the Reactor, which is the designer’s step further into emulating the power amp and speaker frequency response. I'm currently working on an Amp-in-a-Box circuit and I think this may be the final touch!

To provide a theoretical framework for those who may not be familiar with.

A tube power stage does not have an output impedance as low as a transistor one (small fraction of an ohm), so the tubes use an output transformer to obtain a low impedance output. The output transformers need to be matched to the speaker impedance, but still the speaker impedance is not the same at every frequency.

Celestion greenback plot (found in on duckduckgo !i):

and because of this changes in impedance, the frequency response of a transistor power stage presents differences with the response of a tube one (see the similar shape):
