I always think of “Velcro” as gated. I always think of “splatty” as undervolted/starved.
Typically, with medium/high gain silicon transistors, you need about 12-13k Ohms of collector resistance (the entire split load divider string) to get near 8 vDC.
On the other side, you need only about 220 Ohms or less to get under 1.75 vDC.
