SOLVED DC jack center pin issues

I normally use a 2.1 DC jack that is the “standard” size. See on the right in the pictures below. What you’d get from Tayda.

I’ve bought the Lumberg style DC jacks (On the left) from PedalPCB so it would 1) fit his pre-drilled enclosures 2) allow me to use the 3in1 DC board to power multi effects pedal projects.

my problem is with the center pin. It seems too fat so that the pin can’t go in. Do you really need a different sized power cable to use only this DC jack? That seems really impractical, but I’ve seen weirder things done.

Any feedback on how people do that? Is it a VHS/Beta choice you make to go one way or the other? It seems weird that out of the dozens of pedals I’ve built and owned, that it doesn’t fit the power and drives me nuts!

thanks in advance!
James

That Lumberg almost looks like a 2.5mm, 2.1mm power leads should fit both 2.1mm jack types.

They should fit interchangeably. No need for a special cable.

Make sure there isn't a little metal tab protruding inside the jack, every now and then I get one that has it and plugs won't go in.

Ok. Good to know. Yeah I tried like 3 of them that I got and none went in. I’ll give it a little more oomph. I’ll try not to Hulk smash it! ??

I think these have to be 2.5. I’ve tried as hard as possible to shove it in on 3 different DC jacks and no luck at all. I’ll reorder new ones and make sure it’s 2.1mm

thanks everyone.

Yes, I’ve had issues with some 2.1mm Lumberg clones that didnt work (they did not look like 2.5mm, maybe just 2.15 or something) from various places (musikding in Europe, LMS in the US)
It’s quite frustrating. There must be some QC problems somewhere in the factory that makes those clones.

Success!! After ordering 2.1mm jacks from Tayda, they now fit the normal power plug. Here’s the side by side. Not much of a difference but you can see the barrel is slightly bigger on the right hand side (2.5mm)

now I can finally use my 3in1 wiring boards to power multiple PCB’s in a classy clean style ?

PS-I went and checked all my orders ever and it wasn’t ordered from PedalPCB. Probably user error on my end while on Tayda or Mouser.
