when i first discovered this board in the pedalpcb shop, it came to me at just the right time..
before i had even tried an ST-9 circuit (my favourite), at the time (‘22) i was all about the 808 circuit (OD808/TS808). I had this idea where I really wanted to do a discrete opamp version, and was looking at the BD-2 & OD-3 for clues and then realized i was wasting my time cos Robert had already thought of this and had a board for it.
so i grabbed one during a big BF haul and then sat on it for a long time.
then out of the blue the other day it just hit me - why not just build the Wilhelm Scream with SD-1 values instead of 808?
so that’s what i’ve done.
how does it sound?
when compared next to a genuine Boss SD-1 unit, this one retains the core sound, character, and drive of the SD-1, but there’s something in the original that has more of a crisp, ‘high-definition’, ‘modern’ sound to it, where this discrete opamp version is a bit rounder, smoother, and perhaps less punchy.
certainly not implying that it's worse, just a little different, still does the SD-1 thing, but perhaps with a little more of a 'vintage' vibe. (for lack of a better term)
if i’m honest, i like the original SD-1 sound better, but im sure there’s something in this that other players might find more appealing with all it’s smoothness and polite behaviour.
i guess you could say, if this and the SD-1 were twins, this would be the well-behaved child and the SD-1 is the brat.
DEMO:
normally when i use a drive for boosting activities i would use the overdrive (lead) channel, but this time ive decided to use the normal (crunch mode) channel in the SLO, as the boosting/goosing effect of this drive is way more exaggerated with the crunch mode.
(Wilhelm Scream SD-1 recipe attached)
