Etching without printers

Hey Folks -

I was wondering if there was any way to make an etched enclosure without using a printer and vector graphics. I do like making sweet waterslide decals, and I'm getting back into the swing of using vector graphics... but I'm interested in a more hands-on method for durable enclosure graphics.

Reverse etch - Is there any type of goop/paint/paintpen/etch-blocker that could be used just like print toner to block the etching chemical, but applied by hand/paintbrush?
Painted etch - Conversely, has anyone had success painting the etching chemicals by hand... or is that a ridiculous idea?

Any ideas, that'd be great. My internet searches haven't come up with any good leads - which makes me think that using a printer as an etch blocker might be the tried and true method for a reason!
