Sounds quite different from the Unpleasant Surprise but with quite a wide range of interesting sounds

I haven't been able to find a schematic online

Yeah although for me it's not so much JFETs in general but J201s in particular. Maybe I have some excellent 2N5952s, J113s, 2N5457s etc, but I rarely have any problems with those. But J201s are needy. And I have bags of genuine J201s which get little love. When you can get them dialled in just right they can sound spectacular, but it does put me off going to the effort of building anything with them. It's a shame because there are some fantastic sounding Menatone circuits which are 100% J201. One day when I'm feeling brave I will build myself another Menatone King of the Britains...

That strikes me as a bit odd since the J201 is spec’d with a much tighter Vp than the 2n5457.

It could well be, but I've rarely had issues with just whacking 2N5457s in a circuit and having them work every time. J201s, however, seem to always need biasing whenever I use them. It's just how it's worked put for me.

🤷‍♂️

Can't see much from here but here's the guts from the Fairfield website

guessing from the writing they probably measure the jfets (guessing 201’s) and have resistor ranges already measured out for biasing? Seems like a trim pot would be easier just not sure why else they need to put the measurement there. I will however upvote this it just sounds wonderfully broken.
