Removing a broken set screw from a knob

Half of the screw head broke off. Now it won't twist and the knob is stuck to the pot shaft like glue.

Any useful remedies? Bonus points if it preserves the rest of the knob.

If I understand correctly, half of the set screws' head is broken off leaving one of the halves intact. setscrewbroken.png

Begin with an application of penetrating oil. A toothpick applicator might help protect the finish on your enclosure. A small amount on top of the screw will help.

I have fashioned tools from old hex wrenches and small round rods to remove broken set screws. (I was a locksmith in a former life). Make sure the diameter is as close to the knob hole as possible. The tool should fit into the hole snugly, yet turn freely on top of the screw.

Flatten one side of the end of the tool to form a "D" shape. This should fit into the cavity left by the missing half of the screw head. Gently "persuade" the screw counterclockwise. I encountered a few that beat me, but my success rate was pretty good.

Hope this helps and good luck!
