Square Pad for Switches

Terrible title sorry.

I’ve noticed that amongst the the switch pads on PCBs, there is usually one square pad (DPDT etc). Although I note that Pedal PCBs ones don’t have this, only others. What is the reasoning for having a square pad? The orientation of the switch doesn’t matter? Although I’ve noticed that on 3PDT daughter boards these also have square pads, but the orientation would matter in this instance?

It usually indicates "pin 1 or A". For troubleshooting, switch omission wiring, directional positioning, etc...
