This Week on the Breadboard: The Tush OD

Yeah, I was a skeptic going in. But lo and behold, opamp saturation never sounded so good, except for the LM308 of course. Definitely try other opamps. Now that I think about it, I should breadboard one with a couple of LM308s.

Billy must be double jointed. I have to slide my hand to play "Tush."
Hmmm, I might have a metal can 308 somewhere....

Yah for me, it's just small hands. He slides from the F to G with his thumb while doing the double stops in the key of G. I can do one or the other but not both. My beard must not be long enough......

Just put this together yesterday.

Ok, so I was rather skeptical about this op amp clipping business. (About as skeptical as I was about CMOS clipping on the Frizzler.... :p )

All I can say is WOW, I've never heard op amp clipping sound like this. ....

Funny detail: Mythos advertised their CMOS Chupacabra (Red Llama clone) as a ZZtop pedal as well.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed with that! Or that the Chupacabra is very much a Red Llama. Didn't work too hard on that one...
I noticed your post in MichaelWs hotbox thread. The hotbox and this Tush are described in similar ways. Mid forward, a fuzzy edge, touch sensitive and compressed. Is it fair to claim similarities?
Edit: Let me find out for myself and order a sheepy pcb

Interesting... They are described in similar ways but sound quite different really. I like both the Hotbox and the Tush. The Tush can be one helluva lot smaller though! I tend to use both at fairly low gain levels. The Tush has a more complex sound once it starts distorting and you play more than one note. It's all those harmonics clashing with each other I guess. The Hotbox is maybe a more natural tube OD sound?

Another box up done, and what a great sounding Billy in a box. At present I have an LM1458 in there, but I shall roll some op amps and see what me ears and the wobbly mass between it think. Spicey.
Big thanks to @HamishR and @Chuck D. Bones for the magic circuitry.
What have others found about favourite opamps in this as it's such an integral part of the sound, what have you guys settled on?

Arriba andele andele...
