Small Bear has some silicon "dot" transistors sorted by gain. I got some of the low-gain ones for Sziklai pairs and they tested in the advertised range on the TC-1. Searching for "silicon dots" should turn them up.

If you have control over the board layout, it works to use screw terminals that have 2.54mm spacing.
