    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

My janky knob solution might work if you've got access to a 3D printer. In a CAD program you make a cylinder. Put a hole in it that tapers from 6.35mm at the bottom up to ~6.00-6.10mm at the top. Print at a relatively low infill (10% ish) and it'll fut/partially crush onto pot shafts. I pull...

    What's your current headache?

The university I work at is "all in on AI." Rumour has it the CIO laid off IT people in favour of LLM bots. I saw a grad program proposal for an AI masters. Why you'd want to paint yourself into a corner with a degree like that vs a comp sci masters (with relevant coursework) is beyond my...

That one concert (tour) you missed and would sacrifice something valuable for today to have been there.

I chose not to go see Converge and Cursed in 2006. Only show-related choice that haunts me. I generally take a hardline against seeing reunion tours but I kind of feel like I missed out skipping The Refused maybe ~10 years ago.

    G&L guitars getting sold?

I think Marisa Paternoster (Screaming Females) plays a Comanche. The headstocks are a bit janky but I've always wanted a fallout bass (fallout guitar also looked cool).

Share YOUR music! (full tracks, clips, demos, loops, jams, whatever)

Thanks! This has been a weird experience. The last time I released something it was with a band so I'd had months of feedback from friends. This time I did almost everything myself and I'm not playing live. So your comment is the first piece of tangible, positive feedback I've gotten (which I...

Share YOUR music! (full tracks, clips, demos, loops, jams, whatever)

I know this is 11 months and six days later but I did finish it (3rd track)! https://adistantmirror.bandcamp.com/album/s-t

What pcb did you buy on a whim and like?

The Pro-10 was my biggest surprise. I almost exclusively use the bluesbreaker side with my baritone and it sounds surpringly good with a bass. The ODR side is just solid mid-gain. Antithesis fuzz is a close second-place.

    Discussion - Amp vs Direct

I do both but record all my instruments direct, which feels kind of backward. It's mostly a convenience thing. Swapping pre-amps or fiddling with a cab sim is generally easier than re-mic'ing. And I doubt anyone will really notice or care when I share the final product. My mediocre mixing skills...

I liked how he applied some ideas that are kind of abstract in physics and space exploration and made them tangible. Like how a group living in a two dimensional space would (or wouldn't) interact with others living in a three dimensional space. Or the dark forest - I get why you wouldn't want...

    What are you currently reading?

I remembered liking it but I'm not sure how much of it I was actually paying attention to. I have a paper copy and the text runs unusually close to the edges of the pages. Really hard to read. I managed to get a janky audiobook copy recorded in the mid 80s. The sound quality is lacking but it...

    What are you currently reading?

I liked The Dark Forest. I also don't disagree with this assessment. I want to give Cixin Liu the benefit of the doubt and assume the hardboiled, tough cop dialogue (and other 90s b-movie type lines) is an awkward translation choice. But some of this is probably dogshit in Chinese too. I...

    What’s really good?

This reminds me - a few weeks ago I was on a kick reading reviews of sex dolls (they're very funny, I highly recommend doing this). Choice quotes: "I don’t know what people are on about saying the eyelashes keep falling off" "f you screw the head all the way on it’s not straight… annnnnd you...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I think the plan might be to drill many holes in a 1032L with loops on dpdt switches. Probably keep it passive. I keep wanting to make things more complicated but it seems unlikely that adding utility circuits like parallel blends or options for patching (this is in my head now) is going to make...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I have not. My brain still jumps ahead to solutions that work with live performance (even though I'm not/don't want to do that). This looks like a good idea.

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Question for those of you with home/office studios. Are you using loop switchers or just swapping out gear? I've been putting some preamps together. I prefer to have them always in my signal chain for convenience but the cable run is getting excessive. I'm about to do some board upgrades and I'm...

    What's on your wrist?

Currently on my wrist: It's a 7 year old Garmin vivoactive 3. I've crashed on it a few times, swiping it over some rocks. Still works. I have a Seiko 5 that I prefer for looks but I like the smart watch for receiving messages and other digital bullshit that I probably don't need in my life.

    Verso instruments

Kind of getting Ikea furniture vibes. I don't hate them but they kind of seem like a solution in search of a problem.

    What's your current headache?

For whatever reason I thought insulating pots with electrical tape was a good idea. 90% of my troubleshooting problems are from a clipped component lead poking through the tape and grounding on a pot. I've fixed this issue well over a dozen times now. And yet I keep doing it, despite the...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I really like the end result of the Aion projects I've done (the EM5 delay hasn't left my board since I built it) but the daughter boards and lack of values silkscreened on the boards is not ideal. I just wrapped up some janky enclosure painting. Still deciding if I want to make them more...

    What are you currently reading?

I just finished the last book a few weeks ago. I think it might be the most consistent science fiction series I've read. The characters behave consistently, the antagonists make sense, it didn't aggressively recycle plot devices. I'm reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf. It's sort of a...
