Scientific measurements of clipping diode differences

Heh...I still have a bunch of them that a long gone poster sent me a couple of years ago. Still haven't gotten around to building a soft clipping widget to test them in though, and in the hard clipper appliances I have on hand the clipped waveform looks fine but I'd never run the appliance that...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

Tube rolling 12SL7s is going to be entertaining with this amp. A NOS Brimar 6SL7GT would run well upwards of a hundred bucks these days, if you could find one. The same tube with a 12V filament and RCA labeling? $18 shipped. There are are plenty of examples of the usual suspect brands out there...

    Suggestions for bipolar PSU??

I just used the Aion implementation for the lowest current +/- 15V brick and did my own PCB. Super simple and no noise issues with a few different EQ and preamp modules I’ve used it with so far. Happy to share the Gerbers with anyone who is OK with a standalone format.

    Crystal Lettuce Dual Drive Pedal?

I built the Silver Edition a while back, for me it already could make more gain than I ever wanted just by itself. I do like it quite a bit since I modded for less gain though. In any case, the build was a nice excuse to do something outside my usual wheelhouse with the graphics. ;)

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

Yesterday I stsrted testing with electric guitar, with a 1 x 8" sealed cab like so, with the horn bypassed: I have two of these cabs, so I'll probably add a horn bypass switch for one or both now that I know how well they work for distorted guitar. With a drive pedal in front the amp can do...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I recently was "given" the sister cab to this one by a friend I have a long history of speaker component swapping with: Eventually I'll do the same crossover mods I implemented in the first one, and I thought I's try bypassing the horn completely to see how the OEM Fishman 8" driver works for...

opinions for a pedal build for dobro player

I have done a few versions of this one for my Dojo, which is a banjo/dobro hybrid with a piezo on the resonator plus a magnetic pickup: https://github.com/Passinwind/PW3B-LPF Since my design is all modular there are plenty of options to tailor to your use case.

Affinity Software - October 2025 Announcement

You could always get a burner email account, I have a bunch for free streaming trials and the like. I like and use both Affinity and Inkscape, and GIMP too, for that matter. But I bought Designer years ago when it first came out, and have rarely bothered to even open the new version.

    What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

I joined the Player’s Circle promotional program to redeem some credits for the large amount of strings I tried when I got my first acoustic a couple of years ago. Out of the blue they emailed me about beta testing a new version of the XS acoustic strings, which were nice but not necessarily an...

    What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

We had the baseline Encore both times, sounds like the extra fifty bucks for the ESP version might well be worth it. I almost pulled the trigger on one this time, and maybe still would if the hand grinder doesn’t pan out. Our kitchen is tiny though, and whoever gets to sleep in will probably...

    What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

Acoustic guitar beta testers from D’Addario. Really nice but I bet they wont’t be cheap. We also got a new coffee grinder for our espresso machine, a hand cranked one this time. Works much better than the semi-jank “prosumer” electric one we wore out another one of.

If you end up going that route PM me and I'll run you through a few mod options to optimize for your specific use case. The most obvious ones would be input impedance and mid frequency choices, both of which I've messed with a lot over the years. All it takes is a few simple component value...

I spec'ed relatively large SMDs (1206 resistors, SO-8 opamps) and all the caps are through-hole. There's a new version in the works that runs internally at +/-15V and can directly drive any power amp, but the current version already has plenty of headroom, especially if you run it at 12-18 volts.

The pedal I posted above works great in situations like yours, for both guitar and bass. There are details in the build threads, or here: https://github.com/Passinwind/PW3B-LPF If hand soldering SMD parts is too much hassle there's another through-hole version in the works, but it's down my...
