    Components material

I use mainly Metal Film Resistors because they're quieter than other materials. When purchasing Electrolytic capacitors I compare 4 things, Size, Temperature rating, lifetime and to a degree price. To me most important is Size, it needs to physically fit the board. Next is Temperature rating...

    Desolders

I'm gonna say IME this is the #1 reason people new to soldering have problems, and its due to either an underpowered iron or not letting a tip come up to temperature through impatience. Often its a combination of both but both can typically be overcome by obtaining a decently powered iron. The...

    Mach1 Clipping question

I was in a hurry when I typed my previous reply, sorry if if doesn't make much sense to you. The way you have the switch wired isn't correct, but shouldn't cause loss of all sound at all times. The diodes on the switch should be in series same as D3 & D4 are on the schematic. Probably easiest...

    Mach1 Clipping question

D3 & D4 are in series. You put the diodes on the switch in parallel. Compare the schematic to your board/layout closely. You need to move one of the wires going to the switch too. D3 anode and D4 cathode should have wires connected.

    t7 transistor tester

I'm not doubting you at all. I was just pointing out it is possible to have a higher test voltage than battery voltage. I've built a couple of pedals with 18vdc available from a 9vdc input using charge pumps. Old battery powered tube radios (such as those used in cars) used voltage...

    t7 transistor tester

It could have a charge pump or series of voltage doublers.

    t7 transistor tester

This is the best spec sheet I found with a quick look. I'm guessing 4.5vdc for transistors up to 30v for zeners but could be wrong.

Do you have a voltage meter? You should be able to check the voltage while testing a transistor.

    Certain Pickups Overloading Fuzz

I'm interested in this too. I've built a few Dumble style tube amps. While studying them I found out he often would tune an amp to a specific type of pickup, i.e. single coil or humbucker, and often the amp would not sound very good with the other type. I wonder if this might hold true with...

    Fume extractor

That should be fine with a HEPA filter. Most important is that it draws the fumes away from you. It looks like yours discharges out of the filter and draws in at the top. Most I have seen would draw in through the filter, but I'm sure you can situate it in a manner that keeps you from...

For The Love Of Gawd, What Is With This Boost Section

What I'm seeing, and this is a question as much as statement because I'm a bit rusty at this, is Rcb (R2) without R1 (Rb) will pull the Base high turning the transistor to FULL ON because it does not have a DC isolating capacitor that would make it a pure feedback circuit. Rb (R1) forms a...

    Universal Color Codes for Wiring?

No it doesn't. The input filter helps clean up noisy a noisy input power supply. Keeping current off ground is more of a safety measure at higher voltages, not a huge concern with our pedals but very important with anything using wall voltages such as a guitar amp. It can also help in...

    Universal Color Codes for Wiring?

In my day job I work on Industrial Instrumentation. The sensors, or Transmitters as we call them, are +24vdc powered and in the wiring connecting them to the main control system black is +positive. The other color, typically white, is -negative. This can vary from facility to facility but in...

    Universal Color Codes for Wiring?

The first three, red, black and green, are commonly used in general electronics as you list. I like that you distinguish between ground and negative, ground should never carry current.

    Bench Power Supply Settings

What do you plan to make that you will use the power supply for? Just pedals? I just got a 30volt 10amp supply off Amazon that works well for me for about $40. Ohm's Law and Watts' Law are a good place to start for theory, Google is your friend :)

Is there a situation where electrolytic capacitors are necessary?

It's not that polarized are necessary it's more of a case of what's available. The amps I've built required 220uf to 330uf with 350volt ratings and polarized electrolytic are all I found in that value/voltage rating. In response to the OP IMHO there is no reason one couldn't replace one type of...
