The fuzz pot is generally a 1k linear. So what you're finding as the useful range is a approx 150 ohms. As mentioned a reverse audio taper makes the useful bit cover a wider sweep of the pot. I'm about to try having a smaller value pot (even still linear), but with a fixed resistor to ground...

I'm late to the party again. I'm pretty sure that the 3.9K resistor should be in parallel to the 5K fuzz pot.
