Long before I joined this forum, I figured 1590N1 was the way to go, in general. Sure 1590B was smaller saving precious PB-real-estate, but the N1 wasn't that much bigger and able to easily fit top-jacks (1590B2 wasn't out yet), fit more mods/controls/circuitry etc — way more bang for the size-buck than a 1590B.
Hammond, oh how we love thy boxes!
Lately I've been thinkering on this concept some more, well actually my subconscious has been toying with the idea far longer than the waking walking wagging-chin surface cells finally fired upon this idear. For instance I knew the 1590Q was 120x120 and would be good for some builds bigger than a BB but smaller than an XX. Playing around with a few enclosures a while ago trying to fit two N1-sized PCBs in a single enclosure, and seeing other PPCBers' dual-circuit combo builds I realised the 1590XX is the ideal height when oriented horizontally. Most recently toying with enclosure sizes I found the 1590DD was the last piece of the puzzle the subconscious was trying to send up to the conscious level. So I mocked up a pedalboard on the floor of about 20 pedals, 2 rows of 10, and I liked what I saw.
NEW-PARADIGM PEDALBOARD:
120mm HEIGHT x whatever width x a reasonable height between 30-40mm give or take a bit.
The Q is ideal for some horizontal 1590BB builds that were ill-conceived and needed a bit of space for top-jacks. The Q also takes care of horizontal BBs that may already have top-jacks, but of course at 94mm the landscape-BB's height is wrong for the NP-Pedalboard.
1590 L-R: N1, B3 (lid sticking up), BB2, "Q" (green-tape BB filling in), XX, DD
Also I have some assorted boxes sourced from China/Taiwan such as a really cool RIBBED 1590BB+sized I've only ever found in Hong Kong —120h x 112w x 43.7. That "ribbed" one to the left of the green-taped "1590Q" below, except you can't see the external side ribs in the pic.
Sure you could include 1590BBS, 1590X, 1590D... but as you can see in the photo, that's starting to get to be too tall for some of them.
