Can you guys help me understand some OTA distortion circuits?

Hello everyone!
I've been a bit obsessed with solid state preamps, and recently I've found the ones that employ an OTA for distortion (e.g. the Lab Series L5 and the Peavey Mace). From what I understand, they benefit from the soft distortion characteristics of the differential input. What I fail to understand is the voltage controlled amplification (pin 5). Another question I have is: for distortion circuits (where matching is less critical, I suppose) could a simple discrete VCA (let's say, a diff pair and a current source) replace the OTA?

Attached, you'll find the distortion segment of the Peavey Mace schematic. U15 is supossed to be a CA3094 and U2 is a 072
