Cleaver taming

I built a Cleaver for a friend w a foot switch to toggle btw normal and hot settings. Also plumbed a separate volume knob for the hot setting. He says its TOO hot. He normally puts about a 6-8 dB push on his Strat at all times and wants something a step up from there for solos. etc. It covers such a wide range of gain that he has a hard time dialing it in at the lower settings. It has a linear pot in it already so it shouldn't be that "jumpy" on the low end. Is there component substitution that could soften the gain somewhat?
