Drebbel/Submersible - super low input impedence?

Thinking of building one or both of these. The schematic shows insanely low input impedance since the volume is a voltage divider B50k pot at the input before any buffering. I can’t imagine that working well with a passive bass.

Yet the originals are pretty legendary. Is that part of the mojo of this pedal?

Or does it make way more sense to put the voltage divider after the first gain stage?

Alternatively, I could use a much larger pot in the same spot.

Thoughts/experience?

I’m a noob at building pedals but I’ve built a lot of onboard stuff like buffers.

Peavey T40 here. Mine works great both DI and into an amp. I don't really know much or care much about impedance though. It's never come up as a known issue.
