How to mount LDR in Trembling Loon?

First time poster, hopefully some good advice out there! I'm building up a Trembling Loon, I've never built anything with LDRs before. Do you mount the LDR and driving LEDs flat on the PCB and let them reflect off the enclosure? Or mount them a bit higher off the PCB with the leads bent to face each other???
 
Found my way to the build reports and a couple of gut shots showing the LED and LDR pointing at each other as you say. Now that I think about it some more, I should be able adjust the spacing to get unity gain on the pot around noonish too, and account for any variability in the particular LED / LDR used.
