Epiphany of the day -- fresh off the soldering iron:

Buhbye tone cap, hello tone resistor! As we all know, loading the pickups changes the tone (darker, less resonant). So, why not have a variable resistive load tone pot, instead of the usual kind? Instant pickup swap!

(seriously, this is a big epiphany for me)
