For leaflet sockets, you have to bend the legs at a clean 90 degrees. Once that's done, I have no trouble with them. Or just solder the ICs

It is. Try things dialed lower than you think they should be... the goal is off-bias / starved voltage. Neck pickup, tone rolled...

Don't toss stuff out. That first one with low hFE could be used as a clipping-diode, or there ARE circuits that require stupid-low hFE.
