    What's on the workbench?

Field Programmable Gate Array It's sort of like designing a custom CPU - an FPGA is basically a *bunch* of logic gates (the most basic building blocks of computing), and the connections between them can be rewritten at will (hence the "field programmable"), so it's basically custom hardware...

What is the Circuit Etymology of This Schematic?

Wait, and am I reading it right that the gain controls are wired opposite one-another, so as the gain on the first stage (that gets clipped) goes up, the gain on the second stage (no clipping, so I guess gain recovery/clean boost?) goes down and vice versa? Interesting!

What is the Circuit Etymology of This Schematic?

Kokko Distortion as in this? Where'd the schematic come from? If it's accurate, I'd be pretty surprised that a $30 pedal has a custom dual-gang gain pot with two different tapers, that'd be weirdly cool. If so, yeah looks to maybe started as a heavily modded Turbo Rat (LED hard clipping...

    Bassman Tonemaster comparison

Depending on where you buy online, you can get it tax free with like a 15-20% coupon (especially now that everyone is doing "Black Friday" sales) and that takes some of the sting out of it. Just checked, and with their Black Friday coupon, Pitbull Audio's got the TM Bassman for $1199 with no...

    What's on the workbench?

ARE YOU SHITTING ME RIGHT NOW The REGULAR Conspiracy Theory has germanium, the LIMITED EDITION SPECIAL BONAMASSA-DESIGNED GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT VERSION gets silicon??? Is this just a giant roundabout way to troll Klon enthusiasts who buy shit just because it's rare and not because it's good?

Jfet sub and specs for life/parentheses/ache?

They’re just buffers so it’s really whatever. The PF5102 was already a sub for what would’ve been a 2N5458 in the RAT chunk of the circuit, and a 2N5458 is like 99% the same as a 2N5457 (IIRC same manufacturing process just binned for different Vgs(off) ranges, but even those ranges have *tons*...

    RAT vs RAT2

yeah like whenever I see a cap of like 220n or less in the audio path I think "tone shaping" but as soon as it hits 1uF I think "blocker". (and then you have the Timmy in the middle, with an 820nF that *just* barely hits the audible range at some settings lol)

    RAT vs RAT2

Not really, at 1uF and hooked up to a 10K resistor, the corner frequency is 15Hz, so well below the range of human hearing. For DC blocking, you usually pick such large values (1uF or larger) specifically so that their effect is outside the range of human hearing. You usually see 10uF...

    1 uf 7.2 x 3.5 box film capacitor

Ordering from Mouser isn’t the problem, the Kemets are still cheaper and just fine if you don’t need the smaller footprint (which is the case with Aion’s layouts, they’d still fit in a 125B just fine even with the extra millimeter of width)

    1 uf 7.2 x 3.5 box film capacitor

The 50V Wimas are the ones I usually have to buy if I'm doing an Aion project and can't get away with folding over a Kemet. (It's annoying tbh, so much so that I actually designed my own ODR-C-based PCB just so that I could use larger footprints for the 1uF and 2.2uF caps)
