I have the same question. I'd also like to find actual low profile solder-lug DC barrel connectors. All the ones I have found are huge.

Personally, if I am playing my P-Bass in a live situation, I just use a SansAmp. I like the ParaDriver. All in one, can be battery or phantom power, great EQ, great drive, takes pedals well.

Off top, I'd say try adding an asymmetrical clipping section on the output, and a makeup gain stage after it

I bought a couple for an enclosure I drilled poorly. They were fiddly trying to solder wires to the PCB lugs and the interior looks like shit. They work, though! I'd definitely use them on a PCB where they are called for.

It's the leakage thing. Even really crappy leaky Ge transistors will at least make a useable boost, but get it in a Fuzz Face and all of a sudden both transistors are impossible to bias. There's also the consideration that you MUST breadboard, 99% of the time will need alternative component...
