    JFET Shootout

I'll use this occasion to ask: I've recently built a BD-2 and used J201s as that's what the BOM called for. There's something about the overdrive texture I just don't like as much as the original (I have the non-Waza original, SMD version, but wanted a narrower top jack version). Having also...

    DEMO Tube build - BlackVibe!!!

Wait... PedalPCB has a HV board? Where does one procure that? I need that!

    Chop shop 2M resistor substitute...

I routinely sub 2M2 in place of 2M. A 10% up or down is typically not a big deal except in a few key spots. In this case, the idea was pretty much to keep a 1M input impedance despite having a resistor before and after the input cap (a common practice in pedals). The 33k is almost irrelevant...

    UPS v. DHL (Tayda Shipping)...

I foolishly got UPS shipping from Stomp Box Parts recently... got hit with a 158$CAD brokerage bill for a 140$USD order. At least it was fast? One more reason I like Mouser as a Canadian, prices in CAD$, no surprise fees and free overnight shipping as long as I spend at least 100$.

New JFET by TI - very tightly specced Vgs(off)

Surface mount J201 are still widely available though no? (This one is also SMD so no benefit there)

    Does Capacitor Type Matter

Box are typically film caps (polyester or polypropylene), but not all film caps are box. You also have the "red drop" types and other rounded caps. But yeah the box type (e.g. Wima) make for cleaner boards.

King Midas Drive (Keeley El Rey Dorado) - Update

I know this thread is a few months old but I wanted to comment as I'm currently experimenting with that circuit on the Protoboard (have the PCB on order but I like to lock in my "mods" before I commit) As you may or may not know, the El Rey Dorado is a Carl Martin Plexitone clone (the small box...

What is the 1N4001 for on the Protoboard?

Refer to picture. I'm assuming the dual 10k resistors are for creating the Ref voltage for bias op amps, and the caps for cleaning that. But the N4001 diode? There's already the 5817 for polarity protection, so why a second (higher V drop) diode?

    4n7 Polarized Electrolytic Capacitor

For future reference though, you definitely can sub a non-polarized cap in lieu of a polarized. Polarization is not something we want per se, but in bigger values in tends to not be practical to use film or ceramic caps (which aren't polarized), so we use electrolytics (or tantalum) which have...
