Aion FX Blueshift Combo

Quite a while ago I was looking around on Aion FX to see if there was anything I'd like, and I found the Blueshift, which is a Boss Dimension C. I'd never done a dual layer board but I was hot off a successful Low Tide build and ready to take on the world!

I wanted to make it with top jacks and I planned on making it into a portrait 1590bb, but after the board was built I mocked it up in an enclosure and it just wasn't going to fit. I didn't want to give up on the top jack idea and I'd just purchased a 1590xx so I figured I'd cheat a little and make a double pedal with a PPCB style board and that would give me space for the top jacks. I figured an Electrovibe Mini would be a good match for the Blueshift, being that they are both modulation, but different enough from each other, and both are double PCB's.

I painted the enclosure maybe 6 months ago but now spring is here and I was finally able to apply clear coat and finish the build.

Mocking up the switches for the Blueshift so I can locate them into the PCB and solder them in place. I jumped around from one switch to another to keep them from overheating. This pic was taken halfway thru that process.

Both bottom (top?) boards and feetswitch mocked up

The mess begins

Here is an example of me about to use my favorite tool: desoldering braid

Got the footswitch board right this time. And I'm starting to lay out the jacks

Here I'm soldering all the connections for the Blueshift board.

Putting it all together. I labeled the wires so I wouldn't lose track

I came back the next day and took it apart again to make the wiring cleaner. This time I used consolidated power and ground wires so that there are as few wires contributing to the mess as possible.

I messed up and drilled the stereo output jack a bit too close to the Blueshift board, so I actually shelled out for a genuine Switchcraft jack to fit here. I've had bad luck with this style chinese jack shorting if the nut is cranked too tight so I wanted to use a quality part. I tested the pedal at this point and by some miracle it works! It sounds great too, a bit like my Cephoid Chorus but clearer, more complex, and more articulate. Now all that's left is to make the LED.

And it's done! Some hot glue where the jack looked like it might short on the back of the enclosure.

I love these big MXR knobs

Pink indicator for the Uni Vibe (it looks more muted here than in real life)

And blue for the chorus!

Whew! That one was a fight. But I'm so happy with how it came out. The indicator lights could be a bit brighter, this white jewel I wanted to use diffuses much of the light. I may go back in and swap the CLR's with 390 ohm components. But not now. Now is for sleep.

As a small update, the Blueshift sounds amazing. My favorite sound is all 3 switches up. The electrovibe isn't bad, but there is a volume drop in chorus mode that isn't there in vibrato mode. I'm going to swap out R4 for a 2M2 and see what happens. I would like for it to be more intense and syrupy, but the volume fix may get me there. Thankfully R4 is on the board closest to the back panel

I changed out R4 for a 2M2 and it did make the volume a bit better, but it's not as full as I'd like. The sound is fairly thin, like a strat in the in between positions. With my other vibe pedals I always liked having a clean boost up front. Maybe that's a necessity with this as well. I'd like to integrate one inside the enclosure since it's so big anyway but there just isn't room to do it cleanly

Check out GuitarPCB's AfterBlaster, currently on sale for 59¢! It'll give you a JFET boost after, of course, the ElectroVibe while replacing PPCB's 3PDT-daughterboard.
[EDIT: DOH! OF COURSE I forgot there is NOW AVAILABLE a similar type of boost board right here on PedalPCB, but using an IC; here's the thread. ]

Speaking of daughterboards... what you said was the "right" way to wire it is entirely subjective.

I prefer this...

... to what you braided it to.

Very cool build, I think that's a great pair of peas to put in a single pod.
