    Reverb Preferences

I use the spring reverb in my amp (Vox Pathfinder) for a little bit of ‘everyday’ reverb, and I’ve got an EHX Cathedral when I want a more obvious ‘effect-y’ sound. Haven’t been too drawn to DIY options. Though building a bigger (than what’s in my amp) real spring verb (maybe with exposed...

    circuit modifications in amps

I don’t have much to add to what others have said: i.e. read up on existing resources, come up with and articulate a plan about what you’re trying to accomplish, etc. I will say, as someone whose day job is Master Electrician… Things I would do: go poking around in a 480V electrical panel, as...

Sourcing Compact Red Metal Film Caps

Mouser and Digikey search game changer?

I just want somebody to come to my house and sort the Mouser box once it shows up!

Mouser and Digikey search game changer?

For ICs I search by name, then filter by package type (assuming I want through-hole stuff) and “in stock”. That gets rid of about 90% of the chaff. For resistors and caps I put in a few more attributes like type, tolerance, voltage rating, etc. Of course now you also have to look at the...

Do you pay any attention to Capacitor ‘Life’ ratings?

Re: stacked PCB stuff, I do have a Blueshift in the ‘to build’ queue. But I used Aion’s Mouser BOM for that, so I assume everything should fit. I have a Madbean Skoolie that I still need to order parts for. Guess I’ll have to pay a bit of attention there…

Do you pay any attention to Capacitor ‘Life’ ratings?

I’m buying stuff strictly for new builds. I generally stick to Panasonic/Nichicon/Rubycon @ 35-63V for electrolytics. The only piece of “vintage” gear I still own is a Casio CZ-1000, and it does have a wall-wart;)

Do you pay any attention to Capacitor ‘Life’ ratings?

Cool, kinda figured it was mostly a non-issue for pedal stuff. Good to have it confirmed by knowledgeable folks 👍 Most of the re-capping stories I’ve read have been on synth DIY forums. People working on vintage synths with on-board power supplies, from the days before wall-warts became...

Do you pay any attention to Capacitor ‘Life’ ratings?

I was searching for some electrolytics on Mouser. Generally I just filter by voltage rating and maybe manufacturer, don’t usually worry about tolerance for electrolytics. I just spotted another parameter I’ve never noticed before: Life. Options for the ones I’m looking at are 1000, 2000, 5000...

    Dunwich Cthulhu: "Whippoorwill Fuzz" (w/Gerber)

Nice design! And the Nightjars get even spookier when you read about their old name… https://www.sibleyguides.com/2015/03/why-are-they-called-goatsuckers/

    What's on the workbench?

They also hand paint fake stripes on all the resistors. Some real artisanal shit!

What's in a passive line attenuator?

They need some better marketing. I’d be selling this as a “Discrete-Channeled Differencing Mixer”! ;)

Very high soldering temperatures and components/boards

I now use a Hakko with a digital display, but before that for many years I used a Weller knock-off (Tenma brand) that just had a dial with hash marks. If I was using a new type of solder (I did use lead free a few times, but ended up going back to leaded), I would get the dial ‘in the ballpark’...

Trimpots: single-turn vs multi-turn, drift over time?

The most obvious argument against multi-turn trimmers is that they tend to cost significantly more than single-turn. It only makes sense to spec a more expensive/precise part if your circuit actually needs that level of resolution to be dialed in properly. Of course if you’re just building a few...

“How did they make that sound” thread

This one popped up on a playlist the other day and I got curious about that guitar sound. Google reveals that Lindsey recorded it at home and played the bass and a “down-tuned” guitar. There’s some general stuff saying that he sometimes used an overloaded tape recorder preamp for his distortion...

That looks like the same signature blue that Park (bicycle) Tools uses. Can you true a wheel with this thing? ;)

    Jlcpcb and tariffs

What’s wrong with it in this case is that the supposed aim of the tariff is to encourage increased manufacturing in the US. But if you slap non-strategic tariffs on everything, you wind up including specialty items (like rugby goggles for one example) that will never plausibly be manufactured in...

    Jlcpcb and tariffs

Except that businesses specifically competing with ‘Chinese fast fashion’ were more likely to be large retail chains and not independent mom-n-pops. And of course there’s all the small specialty shops that rely on imports of stuff that will never make sense to manufacture in the US. Just read...
