    BC550C

BC550 & 549 are both selected for low-noise, so you won't notice a difference, especially with a guitar pedal. Where you are more likely to notice a difference is between A/B/C hFE (gain) classification, and it would only affect circuits that rely on that particular gain range. In general...

Based on the 2SK208 datasheet: The board should be: but maybe the designer can confirm.

There it is, glad to hear it's working!

SOLVED Low Tide - No Audible Chorus Effect When Engaged

It sounds like a problem with the the modulation or delay circuitry. If you have a multimeter, you should check & post the voltages of each IC. Pay particular attention the behavior around IC2 pin5, IC5 pin1 & pin7, & IC6 pins 2-4. On those pins, check the voltage as you sweep the Rate knob...

    Low Tide Non-functional after re-boxing

Try trimming the leads on your jacks & LED, they may be shorting out on the back of the enclosure when you box it. You may also want to insulate the unused leads on your jacks with heat shrink or electrical tape. In tight-fitting builds, I will sometime cover the rear enclosure cover with...

    BC550C

I've been using BC549C as my high gain NPN of choice for a while and it's a good general purpose replacement. It was tough to get 2N5089 for a bit, and the BC549C slotted in nicely. It's widely available, even from cheap vendors, and the specs have been quite close between lots. I believe...

Low Tide Issues - Low Volume, no effect

I'd bet that's the issue. The 2SK30ATM-Y's that I got from Tayda test as DGS, but the datasheet says they should be SGD. I'd turn off at least one of those DIP switches as well. Right now you're both boosting the volume and cutting it.

SOLVED Low Tide - No Audible Chorus Effect When Engaged

I don't see why the 3208 wouldn't work. The delay time would be around 2x that of the 3207, so it would sound more like a delay than a chorus. On your demo, it doesn't sound like the Gate is opening or closing at all, and as that controls the chorus volume, you should troubleshoot that first...

    Loafing Lounge

Thanks fig! It took a bit of trial and error to find a setup that worked for me, but I prefer the all-in-one platform because I use the same desk for work. Being able to move the whole thing without disconnecting everything makes it much easier to pick up where I left off. The biggest challenge...

    Loafing Lounge

Gotta make use of all that reappropriated office equipment somehow! I posted a schematic in my thread over on FSB on the Level-Loc. My finished builds also use some PCB faceplates that I'm pretty happy with:

Low Tide - Almost Working. Help?

Glad to hear it's (mostly) working! 9 times out of 10 its a wiring mix-up or a solder joint, so reflowing can really help. I would call the effect gentle or soft, but not subtle. If it sounds subtle, you probably need to get the Gate dialed in better. I definitely recommend doing all of your...

Low Tide - Almost Working. Help?

Those voltages look pretty good, but don't necessarily tell us if the randomizer IC is working. How does the voltage on pin 5 of the randomizer change as you adjust the Rate knob? If it steps very slow when the knob is down & gets faster as you turn it up, the IC is probably fine. The amount of...

Low Tide - Almost Working. Help?

For the LM258, you can sub in LM358 or LM2904. I built one with 2SK30ATM-Y and it should work with the same pinout as 2SK208. I prefer the sound with the 2SK vs. J201. If you set the Mix knob to 100% dry (no delay), does it sound similar to your bypass signal? That will at least rule out the...

    Gauging Interest in Microphone Circuits

Unfortunately, high-transconductance, low-noise JFETs are like unicorn blood these days, so you'll likely have to pay good money. The SMD version is/was 2SK209BL, but you can also try BF862, or if you're OK with an SC-70 package, 2SK880, 2SK879, & 2SK932. The best current-production option is...

    Cutting Perf board

I use the score & snap method that perfboarder mentioned & it works great. I usually run the blade 2-3 times per cut and it snaps easily by hand. Sanding the edges to get rid of any extra copper can be helpful in preventing short circuits & intermittent grounding against an enclosure. As fig...

    TSS80P soldering pen

I've had a TS-100 for 3-4 years and I love it. Super lightweight, heats up fast, easy to adjust settings, & runs on a generic laptop brick. I'm using some open-source firmware and it's miles better than the stock software. I have it set up to display the temperature at all times, and the buttons...

    Low tide help?

The pinout of 2SK170 (through-hole equivalent of the 2SK208) is DGS, but the J201 pinout is DSG. I can't quite see from the photos, so make sure you've swapped the Gate & Source pins before placing it in the socket. To keep them from shorting out as you cross them over, you can use a piece of...
