I've had this bass for 15 years, it's just over 50 years old and still the holes remain. Honestly I never really think about the holes. All the best fender basses I ever played had the holes. To me, the only way to screw it up is to actually leave the pickup cover on.

Auditioning, yes. You can tell these came from separate batches since they're attached differently. The Left one got resistor leads while the one to the right is a much more rigid pin strip from the opposite side so I couldn't bend it out of the way.
