I am thinking of building this but the through-hole JFETs you mention are hard to get here. One place has suggested subbing BF256B JFETs because they have them in stock. I don't have a clue if they would work or not. Do you have any experience with the BF256B?

I am a lover of both bass and treble controls, but in the case of the Red Llama I much prefer the version without the tone control. It doesn't really need it and the tone control takes away something IMO. But you have just made me wonder about a Red Llama with a bass control... Hmm...

Just a word about desoldering braid: not all braids are the same. The stuff Tayda sells, for example, is useless. I use a Japanese one I get locally which works spectacularly well. I think it has plenty of flux in it which makes a bit of a mess sometimes but it's easily cleaned up with some IPA...

I've used Warmoth a few times and the quality is excellent.

Mine used to be the OKKO Diablo. But since reading Chuck's excellent thread on it not only have I built one which works but modified some which work for me even better. It's all to do with how you select the JFETs. J201s are a PITA. Never had a problem with other JFETs, just J201s.
