There are kits from Fromel electronics to mod amp. These are bit spendy, but you learn a lot about amps and do your mod in a safe way. Great for doing the first time.

I don't see any medical reason for short time tasks. I had very good experiences working with my daughter. We did a ukelele and a Cajon together. But I can't work with my wife, she need plenty of room and has completely different way to work. If we do e.g. cooking together, I have always to look...
My approach now is to combine a strat enhencing low gain overdrive with a not too nasty distortion and this goes into a Foundation pedal. Not new, but approved.
The specific pedals still vary, so I doubt I'll ever box that.

A Wire pot i think. There is a unisolated wire very evenly wound around a high ring and the wiper turns 300 degr. around on the inside touching the wire. Built this way it should be linear.
