Good brand of paint pens for enclosure?(Artistro sucks)

I've started ditching the pens and just using the giant refills of paint you can buy for them (I think I have Posca or Molotow) and an artist's dip/caligraphy nib instead. Much more control and less waste (no globs or shaking needed).

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Yeah, would be tricky to get in there with an SMD version. That said, you could do an MMBFJ201 on a thru-hole adapter, like the ones PedalPCB sells directly. Guaranteed to be an authentic J201 and will work in your socket. I understand the frustration, for sure. For harder to find stuff, like...

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

You could measure the J201, but that would require building/breadboarding a test rig to get it right (as per this post). In my case, turns out a batch of mine are way off spec to the point that they "work" depending on the circuit, but are likely fake. Where are you located? I could send you a...

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

That's progress at least! Based on your symptoms being similar to mine when I first built my Low Tide, I'm not surprised it's one of the FETs. Are you able to get another J201 or 2SK208 to try there?

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Sorry! These instructions were not great. I adjusted them a bit so they are hopefully more clear. Basically the probe acts as your pedal's output, so you don't need to connect anything to the output jack. Connect an audio source to the pedal input Connect the probe clip to a ground point for...

suggestions for fuzz circuit to be made as a "one knob on top" pedal

I'm a huge fan of the Bazz Fuss for a simple fuzz. I like to use an MPSA13 and tweak the components, but stays true to the 1-knob simple vibe.

    Half my J201s are bad?

I think I'm just going to go through them all and assume the ones that measure off are fake. I'll audition them when it's not crucial, but otherwise pick up some SMD versions to sub in going forward. Already spent too much time on these! Thanks for the help.

    Half my J201s are bad?

Thanks! Hmm. I must be doing something wrong or my DMM is acting up. I still get about 1.18v for VP but can't get a reading for Idss (changed my DMM to mA) Going back to the prior vero layout, I get 1.08v and 97.7mV

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Not sure of any tutorials, but the principle is simple enough: Plug a sound source into the input jack of the pedal, as you'll want hands free to move the probe around (I used to play music through my phone until I built a test rig with a tone generator and probe built in) Use a cable to go...

    Half my J201s are bad?

Hmm, that would make more sense, but is it likely Tayda was providing fake J201s in 2012? And if they are fake, what are they really? As they still seem to work fine in most circuits I've been trying them in aside from the Low Tide (which has no bias trimmer). I'll have to re-measure. I also...

    Half my J201s are bad?

Thanks. I initially threw something together on a breadboard based on the ROG site schematic, but then built a little measurement board on vero based on the layout in this post. Same results with both methods. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with my DMM? I just have it set to measure DC volts...

    Half my J201s are bad?

For what it's worth, most of the ones that measure weird still bias OK and sound good in the Son of Ben and Supreaux Deux I just tested. Maybe they are at the high end of spec, but still good? Or maybe I made a mistake in my measurements both times? Maybe an appeal to some of the experts like...

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

No volume drop on mine once I got it all set up properly. That said, I did initially have a similar experience (able to recreate some settings that sounded right, but also a distorted signal depending) and it turned out my J201 was bad. If I were you, I'd learn to use the audio probe and...

    Half my J201s are bad?

Thought I may have screwed something up on the breadboard, so I built the measuring layout as per this post, but still get the same, high measurements for almost all my J201s (even ones that worked fine in my Low Tide). Any experts have any advice?

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Amazing! Great job. Many would have given up long ago. It's a tricky effect to dial in (especially the trimpots). I messed with mine for a few days before getting it right (after replacing a faulty transistor). Keep us posted!

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Oh yeah, sorry--I didn't see the socket under the J201. That's much easier!

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Yeah. Should be fine. Depending on how comfortable you are with SMD, that might be the easier one to remove, as it may be tricky to get the through-hole pins out cleanly. Just be careful not to let the soldering iron sit on the pins too long, so you don't damage anything. I find some tiny...

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Yeah. The board was designed to use either or, depending on what parts you have on hand, as some through-hole transistors are getting harder to find. Oh, yeah, definitely only use one in each spot.

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Look closer at that photo---they used SMD versions of both the 2SK208 and the J201, so it is there. Did you receive an extra J201? I believe that may work in that position as well.

My first build. Low tide. Made a mistake. Is this redeemable?

Hmm. Quick look and it appears as though you didn't install the 2SK208. That would definitely result in no sound. *EDIT: @music6000 was quicker on the draw than me. Ha
