A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

The amp models the power amp boards came from just used a double pole switch for the standby and switched the light from the second set of poles. There are probably already header pins allotted to powers/standby lighting, I'll have to take a lot at the factory documents the designer gave me. But...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

Originally an etched plexi front plate with LED backlighting was in discussion. But yeah, power and/or standby indicator lights wouldn't be a bad idea, and I think I probably saved a few nice jewel indicators when I sold off a big bag of them on eBay several years ago. The guy who sold me the...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

And now that I've had the chance to really wring the amp out for a couple of hours I don't think there's a single thing I want to change. Goes from super modern to Motown with my active fretless Marco Bass, noise floor is outstanding, and 100 tube watts in this format can easily get louder with...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

Just finished bias calibration and power testing, it behaves exactly as expected. Glad I bought the TAD STR power tubes in 2020, the current pricing on a matched quartet has gone up over 50% by now. I finished the board layout this morning for a variable HPF to go in this thing, but I already...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

Time to bench test in 100 watt mode, then on to wire dress cleanup and designing a screened top vent. My luthier friend offered to laser cut or CNC machine something cool, so the sky's the limit pattern-wise.

    What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

For whatever reason Amazon decided this warranted a second day physical delivery from UPS, for a $7 order. I live like 5 blocks from the post office and I know the driver already had to drop off plenty of Amazon stuff there anyway, but OK. Of course my new tube amp needs one of the few slow blow...

All In One Buffered Instrument Interface

Ah, I saw an SMD device in your pic and thought you were maybe going that route anyway. Personally, I actually find SMT boards more enjoyable to work with by now, but vive la difference. For straight up buffers I'm not so sure you'll hear a meaningful difference with OPA1642 vs. the 2134, but in...

All In One Buffered Instrument Interface

I'd go with modern FET opamps in the high impedance slots, IME something like OPA1641/1642 will likely sound nicer for this application. Beyond that, I've had good experiences with the Traco power bricks and have been messing with various outboard power schemes for one of my basses for some...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Output transformer upgrade in my DIY tube bass amp: Luckily the chassis was originally drilled for the bigger (correct size) one, so I didn’t have to strip out boards and drill new holes.

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

New 100 watt output transformer finally installed now, old 50 watt one in foreground: The mounting centers are only different by 1/16” and since my CNC map was done for the big one I didn’t have to modify anything but one wire pass-through grommet. The picture doesn’t quite convey the huge...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

2003 Lelit espresso machine, probably the third major rebuild I've done on it over the years. $150 in parts this time, but at least parts are still readily available. New pump, pressure valve, steam valve, and assorted fittings and gaskets. One major leak turned out to be a broken o-ring I...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

I used a little chassis ground isolator board a friend had shared on OSHpark and was careful about avoiding loopbacks, but the first time I used one of these power amps it totally gave me fits working out what went to dirty ground and what went to the clean side. I think I could still improve on...

    What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

100 watt Hiwatt DR103 clone output transformer from Heyboer, which they shipped before even telling or billing me. I've been super impressed by the 50 watt one I'm currently running in a test build.

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

The red board is a Glassware Audio 12V regulator for the preamp filaments, but that 12V rides on +68V derived by a splitter from the +280V preamp supply. This is done to keep cathode to heater voltages in bounds between the White Follower-ish (totem poled) line driver format and the typical...

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

Power amp board, DC filament regulator, filament voltage elevator board, preamp B+ supply voltage drop/filter board, DIY tube socket breakout boards w/SMD grid stopper resistors right at tube pins. Preamp board originally from a rack preamp build in 2015, I would do many things differently by...

    High Voltage Hijinks

Since I just got my new one going properly yesterday, looks like it'll be moi. New output transformer shipped from Heyboer two days ago, so I'll be doing proper guts shots soon.

A DIY 100 watt tube bass amp

I'll do a full build thread here in the next few days, but I only got this thing running properly yesterday and need to do a bunch of detailing before I do gut shots. 100 watts, 4 X EL-34, 1 x 12SL7, 2 x 12AU7 1/8th inch aluminum enclosure from here: https://landfallsystems.com/ Laser...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Back to the new tube bass amp this morning. Finally realized I'd made the same lame ass mistake wiring it up that I did the last time I used a set of these preamp PCBs, back in 2015. But it somehow still sounded good at low to moderate volume this time, even though I knew my measurements didn't...

CONTEST It's Time For Some Giveaways (Round 4 of 4)

All drive pedals are overrated. I’ll show myself the door. Of, wait. Muffs are more overrated. 23 skidoo, that’s the ticket.

Faceplates using Oshpark's "Afterdark" PCB printing service (designed with KiCad)

Nice work. Cost? I tried something similar for small control labels as proof of concept but for me just using Amplifyfun to do UV prints is already relatively cheap and a bit easier. OSH took a long time to fulfill my order too, around a month.
