Don't forget to change your strings!

Bass strings: every year or three, I am using pressurewounds on both my basses and both are fretless fours. If I use my slide on them a lot that wears them out faster, for sure. GHS 40-96 for the one with single coils., SIT Silencers in 45-100 for the one with sidewinder humbuckers. Acoustic...

    JLC alternative in US?

DK Red boards drop ship from Royal Circuits in Calififornia, FWIW, at least every time I’ve used them. But I guess they still could outsource? Try running a quote for the same spec directly from Royal, talk about sticker shock! :ROFLMAO:

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

HPF/PEQ/LPF running internally on +/- 15V, pickup blender for my Gold Tone Dojo w/resonant LPF for the piezo side. First one can be run in the EFX loop of the second, or I have multiple other options for the magnetic pickup side.

But will it drive a power amplifier??

If you want to go amp free, why show us an amp? 😎 Please detail your actual desired signal chain. In general, if you need a line level output (0dBu or higher) it often pays to use a power supply voltage higher than 9V for your preamp/line driver. These days that is easily accomplished even...

    New (to me) opamps

I'll definitely check it out, and 5V power is super easy to come by these days, thanks. For my own pedal use cases battery power is mainly just an open mic thing for when I need quick and dirty EQ correction without messing with someone else's amp or FOF settings too much. Doing a more extensive...

    Ginsly’s Acoustic Preamp Build

Try an OPA1642 on an SMD adapter, if it'll fit. I've done quite a few acoustic instrument preamp builds over the last few years (for guitar, mando, Dojo, and upright bass) and IME that's been the sweet spot for a cost effective low noise choice.

    New (to me) opamps

I'm still playing catch up on optimizing for the OPA205 family in low current onboard preamp builds and battery powered pedals, and then using the small Traco power bricks for +/-15V power in pedals. But a headphone output for a new PEQ/Preamp/DI pedal is on my to-do list, so I'll definitely be...

Minor Break - Fume Extractors Recommendations (w/ Dang I'm Gettin' Older on the side)

Around here a few of the more uptown sailboard makers had whole rooms with downdraft ventilation/exhaust systems. I’ve been contemplating a DIY desk build for a long time and have a stash of freebie bass amp fans that might be enough to make a viable one if it’s not too big.

Guitars Gone Wild! (Only $19.99!)--crazy guitar thread

Love it. I actually have played this one:

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

My man. I’ve done quite a few modular builds like that and they’ve typically held up just fine. Personally, onboard preamp builds make me a bit more nervous, especially if they’ve going to NAMM. And I’ve repeatedly recommended you for potential pedal builds over at TB from time to time, it’s...

    Where are the knobs?

Not really a fan of anything that looks like cheap plastic, but I still do end up using stuff like that quite a bit. LMS, SBP, whatever Small Bear is called this week, CE Distribution/Amplified Parts, Mouser, anyone but Tayda. Davies 1611 is probably the most tolerable plastic one, and I'm about...

    Electronics Autodidactory

Cruft: http://www.tubebooks.org/Books/intro_Cruft_Electronic.pdf And breadboarding certainly had its place but modeling can save a boatload of time and money if used for the right things. I rarely build drive or fuzz pedals, which would be good examples of stuff that’s so subjective that...

    Electronics Autodidactory

<extreme geezer alert> I started winding slot car motors in 1961 or so. Then I started doing home appliance repairs for money a few years later, at age 10. I went to a trade school in 1972. Still learning every day. I'd suggest starting here: http://www.tubebooks.org/technical_books_online.htm...

    Treble booster options

I am highly biased, but by far my favorite is the resonant LPF section of this open source project: https://github.com/Passinwind/PW3B-LPF There's a different LPF board with a non-inverting front end that is primarily meant for onboard preamps, but works fine in pedals too. I plan to do a...

    New Tayda Enclosure Sizes!

I’ve been looking at some of the angled Hammond desktop enclosures that Amplified Parts and Mouser carry, but 1/2 Rack format stuff has also been a long time interest:

    Desert Island Drive Pedals

Not sure I'd pick any drive. I currently own two but rarely use either one, and whatever my favorite amp turned out to be after I built it to be would already have excellent drive capability by default. But since you want look into some different ones, I have a modded Crystal Lettuce Silver and...

    How many pedals?

Probably around three dozen, with three quarters of those being my own designs. Maybe 15 still here, a few of which were commercial ones given to me to repair or scrap for parts. And then I've done a few dozen rack or desktop widgets and full amp builds, both of which I enjoy a lot more than pedals.

    New Tayda Enclosure Sizes!

Cool, I finally have some incentive to buy from them again.

    NAMM 2026 Pedals

FWIW, the luthier I used to exhibit stuff with in his always very busy booth (pre-COVID) finally bailed this year. Dropping ~$10-20k to almost inevitably come home with some form or other of The Plague and pimp stuff to the same old crew year after year has just lost its charm for a whole lot of...
