Cranky old whiner about the good ol days of diy pedals

Welcome. As a cranky old geezer I've downsized my workspace to nothing and instead spend my Saturdays fixing other people's problems at one of the few remaining mom and pop music stores in the Chicago suburbs. Sometimes I have time to toss together something new. It's rare but I enjoy it that...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I miss brewing. I no longer have the space (or liver) to handle it but I really enjoyed it while I did. Made my own sparge and water setups out of picnic coolers and even had a grain grinder. I got good at producing as well as consuming 😵‍💫 Even had an article in BYO magazine.

    New Pedal Releases

My whining aside, it IS a lovely sounding pedal.

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I have a Maxon Compressor on the bench that worked on a power supply but not on battery. So logical conclusion is the DC switch is knackered which proved to be true and luckily these things are not hard to find. Damn this thing sounds good. A bunch noisy, which is true of this era of comps...

    New Pedal Releases

I hate listening to peeps wank. A few likes and be done with it. I don't need to listen to how talented you are, just need to hear what the pedal does.

What amplifiers do you like for testing how a pedal design/modification sounds?

Good point. HRD is the best selling amp on the planet. From my perspective I'm not selling pedals and I just need to see if the stuff I'm working or works and/or makes weird noises. That said the next up on my bench is the Maxon Compressor and am willing to go out on a limb and say it's one...

    MadBean Trash Compactor

I don't have the stones to even try to replicate this one. James did all the wiring and no...its straight up raw wire. I'd finished the board and had drilled the enclosure and passed it on to James. Only to find out I'd whiffed on the jack placement. He turned a potential turd into artwork...

    Thumbucker Compressor (ValveWizard Engineers Thumb)

I'm gonna have to dig this out of the pile and revisit. I remember being totally underwhelmed by this one. Need to find out what I screwed up. And make no mistake, I'm a compressor junkie.

What amplifiers do you like for testing how a pedal design/modification sounds?

I have this janky old Ampeg G100 that someone gave me. Needed all new electros but there's not much to these things except they're VERY neutral. It can also get uncomfortably loud. It's solid state but breaks up in a very pleasing way and I know what it sounds like so it's a good reference.

    Changing up tubes

All amps in general. I must admit I haven't fiddled with preamp pedals outside of standards like the BK Butler Tube Driver.

    Changing up tubes

Honestly I've always been underwhelmed with anything in the main stage(s) by anything other than a 12AX7. It always sounds like it's a bit winded and struggling, if that makes any sonic sense. Kinda sterile. Now obviously ymmv.

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

That Jazz is going to look superb!! I've never played a jazzmaster (??!!), like ever, which would make it one of the few guitars I've never touched. Never repaired one. Never had to restring one. Weird.
