That’s what I thought it was too! And at the beginnings it seemed like ‘banging it’ helped, but then it got worse and moving the trained around didn’t help at all. That’s when I soldered them to the board itself.

I hear ya on the sockets. I tried taking the sockets out and soldering the trannies straight to the board, but that didn’t fix anything. I thought at one time that it was the cord, but I don’t think it was. I may just try your idea anyways and see if that helps at all. I’m at a loss, also...
