(11/25/24 UPDATE IN PURPLE) Carlsbro Flanger PLEASE! Schematic, photos, and info included in description

The Carlsbro Flanger is a one of a kind flanger and a seriously cool sounding one at that. For controls, it has Speed, Depth, Colour (which is regen), and an invert switch that gives a really unique flanging tone (very through zero-esque flange.

From what I can tell, the only prominent user of this flanger is Daniel Ash of the band Bauhaus. It's most notable off Bauhaus's cover of "Third Uncle", where he switches it on during various parts and has it set at the widest sweep. Below I've attached images, a schematic, and a thread which showcases the effect and the internals.

The flanger is does have some faults, so If possible, please make a refined version of this flanger that stays true to the original! It is cool as all hell and absolutely deserves to be come back.

Update 10/25/24
Hey so I wanted to provide an update on this thread: I bought a Carlsbro Flanger! Going to do a little work on it soon, but I am amazed at how it sounds and overall very pleased with it. With all being said, I want to refine and note some specifications about the pedal that may need to be tackled if the pedal was to be replicated into a PCB was to be built:

1. There is a volume drop when engaged. I would imagine an op-amp could be added to bring the signal to unity gain?

2. The unit runs on two 9-volt batteries in parallel which makes it 18 volt. Additionally it's positive ground. As far as powering the pedal, I’m curious what changes would result in a negative ground and 9 volt conversion, and how hard the reverse engineering process would be.

3. The BBD chip used is the TDA1022, which is a 512-stage chip. It's quite an expensive part nowadays so is there a modern equivalent that can replicate the sound?

4. The circuit contains an optocoupler, which seems very odd for a flanger. I really think this adds to what makes it sounds special.

Definitely interested in this one. Not something I was previously familiar with, but it sounds pretty neat and flangers are always fun.

Possible names:
Gropius Flanger
Kandinsky Flange
Moholy-Nagrail Flanger
It really is an amazing sounding flanger. It's truly unique and doesn't sound like anything else. I see what you did with the names. Very clever.

last time I checked the bbd was $30 and, no, that is not worth it. maybe figure out mn3007 conversion instead

4 posts and three of them are on this thread ... kids these days

Ok realistically, yes, you're right. I think a conversion would be better. I'm curious how that would affect the overall sound.

well ... this is where you engage someone like scruffie over at lectricfx where this sort of thing is his bread and butter. that's not to take anything away from Robert and what he does here but DIY is like that, some guys have a particular lane they excel at and old bbd circuits getting a more accessible glowup is what lectricfx is known for

Like minds! I was just looking at this a week or two ago. Bauhaus is my jam.

The TDA1022 is 512 stages. 3007 wouldn't be the way to go. You could use a 3204. I have some but most don't. Better choice would be something in production like maybe two Xvive MN3009s?? You could do a cool split switch a la the Ibanez FL-99 while you are at it.

Was going to suggest Bela Flange, but Bella Lego Seas Flange was a joke-grenade that just landed. Preeeeetty Preeeeetty Good!

run the 3007 at twice the normal clock frequency ... you need more current than a mn clock could provide so you'd turn to CMOS

and you'd have to do some compensatory work to the LFO as well ... forgot to add that earlier

I cannot tell you how pleased I am to see this in the wish list, as I was just looking at this thing in the StompBox book this week and wishing I had a Carlsbro Flanger PCB to build.

Even better and even more pleased that the OP includes the schematic (which I couldn't find) and a demo and pic and its use in context (was/am a big fan of BauHaus L&R etc) — so even if I didn't want to build every flanger ever made, well... that's how to make a wish list entry! I would've upvoted this just based on the quality of the WL-entry...

It's got a formant quality to it.

Might call mine something like "Bwahhahhah" because "Karl's Bro" is too on point.

Was the flanger used on Bella Legosi's Dead? That's got some trippy delay manipulation on it.
"Be' Leggo My Eggo Sis" would be a good fit to a delay of some sort.

H&H echo to a home/hand-made 16 track.
Looks they either manually triggered the delay or gated it to the drums(guessing the later, and they fiddled with the feedback/time live)

I was lucky enough to see them 12-14ish years ago on their US reunion tour. One of those bands I never thought I'd see.
Them and Skinny Puppy (twice, once with Ministry!).
Both had been broken up for years before I got into them around 98-00.
And Perter killed it.

I saw them as well! I saw them back in 2022 at the Masonic in SF. The show was so surreal and just phenomenal. Honestly probably the greatest day of my life and one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Hearing Daniel Ash's cascading-delay type guitar sound during "double dare" and "in the flat field" was amazing.

I'm glad you like it! I've been obsessed with this flanger for quite sometime and being able to make one would be a dream. I've done a lot of digging on the internet for this flanger and I did everything I could in my post to provide as much detail and useful info as possible.

I'm honestly surprised of the traction it's gained on the thread in only two days and I'm happy that a fair amount of people know the effect and seem to like it. With all being said, I'd love to get Robert's take on all this and I really hope that this can become a reality. Cheers!

I'm a big Bauhaus fan and a big flanger fan. Honestly, I never thought his sound was a flanger. I always thought it was phaser.

I've been dialing in my own tone recently, having switched from bass to guitar in my band. I've been digging into different guitar sounds from the genre, like Robin Guthrie and John McGeoch. On bass I always have a low rate high depth with feedback. On guitar this gets the EVH type whoosh. It's been a bit depressing to realize I missed out on some pretty cool guitar tones with regards to flangers. Zero to minimum feedback and max on everything out is something I wish I had in my bag of tricks 10-15 years ago.
