This circuit is the same basic 555 tone generator/ oscillator you can find in the shop, except full size components, and an added LED for a "tone on" dummy light. Use the extra 555 timers left over from my Metronome project! I'd also suggest a parallel 2.1mm power out jack, to power effect to be inspected from oscillator, using 1 power supply out. Fitting easily in a 1590a box, This is a very easy and highly useful project.
Capable of a wide range of frequencies, you'll notice full counter-clockwise on the "frequency" knob will provide a near perfect emulation of a 60 Hz ground loop hum. This is great fun, confusing and enraging bass players in turns. They will go near mad- unplugging, plugging in, cursing, then repeat. Guitar players catch on too quick, and realize the joke. Singers only notice after they've been told- and then want to write a song with it. Drummers ask their girlfriends what is going on and how to fix it.
