AionFx/Fuzzdog/PPCB build dump

I seem to still be building random things for some reason. As in all things some are winners, some are Losers, some are cool but will never make it out of my noise cave. First up is the AionFx Redshift a Blackout Effectors Whetstone phaser clone. I remember seeing one of these in a local guitar shop give or take a decade or two ago and thinking “shit that’s a lot of knobs and switches!”. I listened to some demos and thought it was pretty damn cool, but wasn’t interested in dropping the cash for it since I wasn’t as into pedals at the time. Flash forward to the beginning of my diy days and this project was always mentioned along side the Blueshift as one of those “rite of passage” builds. Having completed the Blueshift ages ago and several of the larger Aion projects more recently I just decided it was time. This is certainly not as complicated a build as the Lovetone or L5 builds or even the Blueshift, but I’m glad I built it, there are a tone of cool sounds in here and having 2 switchable rate presets is a serious bonus. Put this in one of SBPs amethyst boxes and damn is it hot!

Next up are some Fuzzdog boards. First ever Fuzzdog builds and to be honest, their projects are interesting, but their board layouts leave a bit to be desired. I suppose my tune would be different had I ordered some of their daughter boards, but meh. Having loaned my MiniMu to my trumpet player friend I was in the market for another Mu tron III build and I knew the Mootron was a forum fav. Build was fine with the only specialty parts being the vactrols. Does it Mu tron? Yes. Does it play as nicely as my MiniMu? No. Not sure if it is the difference in vactrols, or some other VFE tweaks, but I def like the MiniMu better. IMG_5384.jpeg

Love the Tayda sparkle finishes! Along with the Mootron I got a fuzz pup Mini Crusher, Warp Sound, and Gristlizer. The Crusher is well, a bit crusher and it does it surprisingly well for such a low part circuit. Prefer my Parasit Sonic Reducer, but enjoyed the challenge of a 1590a build. IMG_5249.jpeg

The Gristlizer is mentioned around here on the regular so when in Rome. Afraid this one too was a bit of a disappointment. Not sure what I was expecting, but pretty meh on it. I have better trems and the VCF doesn’t compete with the FilterFx. Maybe I need to play with the trimpots some more. IMG_5378.jpeg

I don’t have pictures of the Warp sound since it’s relegated to a basic bitch bare enclosure, but if you like cocked wah distortion/fuzz tones it’s a pretty good “bang for your buck build” probably my favorite of the Fuzzdog bunch.
I put off ordering/building this circuit for forever and a day because I just kept thinking “I really don’t need to build this”, but on a whim here we are, the PPCB Leprechaun. Is it as terrible a pedal as 90% of the forum thinks it is, nah. If you go into this build thinking you are going to get classic chorus tones out of it, look elsewhere. If you’re into weird then this is your safe space. I did install the intelligent relay switching mod on the magic footswitch and am glad I did. IMG_5293.jpeg

Again Tayda sparkle for the win. I have a plethora of other PPCB builds (Clari(not)/Danube/Mercurial/Variac) that I have not documented, but since we are at the TLDR point in the post I will wrap it up. Maybe next year I’ll get around to it.

We agree on many things:
minimu>moo
parasit>mini crusher
SBP amethyst box=hot

The Leprechaun deserves less hate even though it is pretty much useless. Sometimes useless is a good time.
