Alternative for 2n4062?

I would like to try building a "Tony Iommi Rangemaster" as per this Hello Sailor- tutorial, but he is using a NOS 2n4062 that seems not available for any reasonable price, so what would be a nice substitution for that? And yeah he also has some rare germanium one in there with which I won't even bother...

Thanks!

Looks like the 2N4062 is a lower gain PNP silicon. So maybe a modern 2n3906 will work. That should get you pointed down the right path.

Also, if you wanted, you could flip the polarity of the electrolytics to ground (negative ground instead of positive ground), but you'd have to find an NPN germanium (robert has some good Russian ones that are about 100hfe). Then you could used 2n3904 or some fun old stock NPN silicons (like 2n2369 or 2n3564/2n3565). Just a thought.

Build two.

One that's PNP 2N3906
Another 'n NPN 2N3904

Compare.

See if it's even worth messing with PNP in a mostly NPN world.
If there's no audible improvement of PNP over NPN, why not just build the NPN and not have to deal with voltage conversion on your PSU or charge-pumps etc.

Simplify your pedalboard's (and pedals') power requirements.

The 2N3906 is rough and ready and should work. If you go with the BC558A, you can get a grade with typical gain around 100, which seems about right for the Rangemaster. 2N2907A's are also fairly low gain.
