Catalinbread Drives

Hey Everyone!

I recently finished some pedals based on Catalinbread drives and couple of them seem like they might be off. I've never played the originals so I was curious to see what other people's experiences were before going back in to troubleshoot and/or mod:

RAH/Prince Albert: Overall a bit dark. I find I have to crank the gain and treble for it to work for my ears, but it still seems a little dull. It's a little better if I hit with a boost or bright OD.

DLS/Covert: Very heavy on the bass, somewhat muddy mids. Again, I need to crank the treble to get any bite. A little duller sounding than expected.

It could just be my ears or my rig. I'm playing a strat with fairly weak pickups into an old Carvin Vintage 50 set clean. I tried humbuckers with similar results, as well.

I also completed the Aion Asteria II and PedalPCB Bohemia with this batch -- both sound killer! Plenty of bite if needed, respond nicely to the guitar.

Thanks!

I don’t have much experience with catalinbread pedals. But I’ve built the RAH on vero and found the eq to be lack luster. It always has a lot of bass and didn’t have enough treble. I’ve used a treble booster in front of it and it brings it too life. Whether that’s how it’s suppose to sound or it just doesn’t bond with my tele and vox. I’ve never played the actual catalinbread pedal. Though it does make my tele sound more like a les Paul cranked through a full stack.

Good call on the treble booster... I through a couple on a breadboard to try and it did give the RAW more life, to be sure (Rangemaster and Naga Viper ). The NV had some cool sounds with the input cap blend pot.

Nice demo on the Covert! I didn't think I to try cranking the bass control, that's interesting the way the tone stack behaves. I'll have to try the capacitor mod as well.

Thanks for the input on this!
