I always considered the muff it’s own thing, and personally never associated it with fuzz. Fuzz is fuzz. Muffs are Muffs. Put them together… yum fuzzy muffs…

When I was a kid, I went to a store and asked for a fuzz for bass. Thankfully it was the mid 90s so they handed me a green sovtek. I remember the smell of the wooden box vividly. Anyway, I don't think that dude was incorrect.

For me, it's tied to genre and musical style. Certain effects just lend themselves to certain types of playing.
Distortion = metal and technical 'shredders'
Fuzz = Riffs and blues scale

Muffs are fuzzes in my book:
Black Keys
Dinosaur Jr.
Fu Manchu
Mudhoney
Smashing Pumpkins

Sure, you could play Pantera or whatever with a muff, but it's a bit like ordering a cheeseburger at a Mexican restaurant.

You can put jalapenos on a cheeseburger, and it might be delicious, but that doesn't make it a taco.
