PS: When I'm lazy, instead of desoldering a CLR, I'll just daub some nail-polish/paint on top of super-bright LEDs.

Aha, basically creating your own diffused LED?

I've gone up to 36k and it's an improvement but still surprisingly bright.

It's surprising. The first time I painted an LED, borrowed my wife's nail-polish, it looked opaque, but the LED still shown through much dimmed but still too bright. I laid on some more polish a few times, extra thick, but each time the law of diminishing returns came into play.

I wanted a light-house effect, ie nothing coming out the top, just out the sides of the LED, but out the top came some glow even though the coating was almost as thick as my skull.
