Looking For A Specific Crunch/Distortion Circuit

Does anyone know of a DIY crunch/distortion/over-drive pedal circuit that allows the user to control how clean or dirty the sustain/release transient is? I'm looking for a crunch/distortion DIY circuit that gives control over how much distortion is in the sustain and/or release of of the signal. The attack & decay transients should always be crunchy/dirty. There's likely going to be an envelope follower involved in the circuit.
 
not really ... some of what you describe is in the expandora's opto-fet in the feedback loop of the lm308 but the only way the user controls it is with dynamic playing. that said, it's a starting place for your idea
 
A precision rectifier (peak detector) with a smoothing cap, into a comparator (with threshold control) which drives the base of an NPN transistor. Configure the transistor as a current sink, so switching on increases the draw through a resistor and dynamically reduces the Vdd of a CMOS inverter or MuAmp. Would that work?

Signal peaking would drop Vdd, which increases distortion. Once signal is below threshold, Vdd returns to normal and distortion is reduced.
