As always I'm coming at these things from a mostly bass perspective and unfortunately this one doesn't win my full endorsement. It's full of character as expected but not enough oomph to be used on its own with bass for me. This is only a little disappointing because I found some bass players discussing their uses in some forums but uh... nah.

On guitar, though? You get crusty cleans, trashy blown out fuzz, and the filter is in no way subtle. All the way counter clockwise it's fairly big and full sounding, the other extreme is very shrill and clangy. In between, there's a broad range of scoopy toans that seem to get more pronounced as you turn up the gain. As a person who has a basement overflowing with fuzz, dirt, etc... this thing somehow still provides new and interesting textures to my collection. I highly recommend this one, especially if you've got "rejected germs" laying around.

Build wise, it was a quick and easy project with the caveat that I think I got lucky with my parts ordering. I didn't have anything close the the low hfe transistors that are called for in the BOM so I ordered some MP10B from smallbear. Knowing my luck and assuming the small amount i could afford wouldn't be low enough, I added some 2N233A to the order. I was not only correct, the MP10B were all in the 40's and sounded like trash but the 2N233A matched at 20 hfe and had similar leakage.
