Muffin Fuzz - Martian

Currently breadboarding the Martian version of the muffin fuzz. I’ve only finished the first clipping stage and have tested it. I’ve noticed the input stage bjt doesn’t really boost at all. Is this normal? I’m assuming no but hopefully someone can chime in here.

Secondly I’ve noticed that after the first clipping stage I’m getting a bit of an octave up fuzz sound. I know the full circuit isn’t complete yet and the sound will change but I’m wondering if sonically I’m on the right track. Any input would be appreciated. I’ll also do a write up of this in the test kitchen when finished.

No first hand experience with this particular one, but I thought of some stuff from looking at the build doc:

The input stage should actually have a bit more gain than usual, since the emitter is put directly to ground, omitting the usual resistor there. I would take another look at that part of the circuit and see if anything’s out of place.

The first clipping stage is horribly biased with that 680k resistor on the collector. It’ll have a lot of gain, and probably sound splatty and gated. I think it could definitely have some sort of pseudo-octave effect.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I’ll revisit the input stage since it’s pretty much unity gain. I appreciate the input.

Fixed the input stage. Had the tranny backwards. I finished the second clipping stage this afternoon (I only had about 20 min to work on this). It's still an octave up sound when you hit the lower strings. I need to do the tone and recovery stages next.
